Competition Rules & Regulations

 

REGISTRATION/AUDITION DATES & DEADLINES - 2025

  • Audition Registration Opens: Monday, June 30

  • Round 1 Audition Registration and Recorded Video Due: Sunday, October 19

  • Acceptance Notification into Semi-Final Round: Tuesday, October 21

  •  Semi-Final Registration Due: Friday, October 24

  • Semi-Final Audition Round - LIVE ONLINE: Sunday, November 2

  • Acceptance Notification to finalists: Tuesday, November 4 

  • Final Round Competitor Registration Due: Sunday, November 9

  • Final Competition Round LIVE IN PERSON - New York City Lincoln Center: Saturday, December 6

 

AGE CATEGORIES

Explorer: 6-10

Young Artist: 11-18

Collegiate/Emerging professional: 18-27

ENTRANCE FEES

Round 1 Registration/Audition

                                                                     Solo Piano, Strings, Voice - $60

                                                                     Chamber Ensembles (3-8 Players) - $40 per person

                                                                      Round 2 Live Video Semi-Finals

                                                                      Solo Piano, Strings, Voice - $120 

                                                                      Chamber Ensemble (3-8 Players) - $80 per person

              Final Round - New York City: In-Person

  Solo Piano, Strings, Voice - $300

                              Chamber Ensemble (3-8 Players) - $100 per person

APPLICATION & AUDITION ROUNDS

  • All Application & Participation fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.

  • Entries must be received no later than the Audition Round deadline.

  • NYIMF reserves the right to reject any application that is late or incomplete.

  • No changes of Audition Round Repertoire are allowed after the application is submitted.

  • All entries become the sole property of NYIMF and will not be returned to the applicant for any reason.

  • NYIMF is not responsible for late, damaged, lost, misdirected, stolen, incomplete, or misappropriated entries.

 

AUDITION VIDEO

  • All recorded videos must be taken within 6 months prior to the date of application.

  • Pieces must be performed from memory.

  • Pianists face, hands, feet with pedals as well as keyboard, must be visible for the entirety of the video.

  • String participants' face, hands/fingers must be visible for the entirety of the video.

  • Chamber ensembles should offer a full view of all performing members.

  • Voice participants should offer a view of the entire body.

  • Video recording must be in one session. Only cuts between pieces are allowed. 

  • Appropriate performance attire should be worn.

  • Piano accompaniment is preferred, but not required for the Round 1 Audition video. Piano accompaniment is required for the Round 2 live Semi-Finals.  Pre-recorded accompaniment tracks are not allowed.

  • The competitor must prepare audition pieces in their entirety (no cuts).

  • Competitor must perform without any sectional repeats. Strophic, Da Capo/Dal Segno al Fine repeats are allowed.

  • Only original pieces will be accepted, no simplified versions or arrangements are allowed.

  • The jury reserves the rights to disqualify entries based on the appropriateness and/or misrepresentation of content.

 

APPLICANT SELECTION & ADJUDICATION

  • The decisions of the jury are final and cannot be appealed.

  • The selection of finalists will be based solely on the video recordings submitted.

  • Multiple winners may be chosen in each age category.

  • Competitors are reviewed and judged separately in each category according to age/grade in school.

  • Written feedback from accomplished professional musicians and teachers will be emailed to every applicant. This is to help all applicants improve their performance.

  • In all competition rounds, applicants are judged individually on musicianship, technique, and overall artistic expression. Competitors with the highest individual scores are chosen to advance. Competitors are NOT ranked or judged against each another.

  • The panel of judges is comprised of professional performing musicians and teachers.

 

COMPETITION FINAL LIVE ROUND – NEW YORK CITY

  • Audience Tickets are sold separately: Adult-$30, Senior-$20, Student-$10

  • Piano Accompanists are required for string an vocal finalists.

  • In consideration of Competition Finalists, children under the age of 10 are not allowed to attend the live final concert/competition round.

  • Formal Concert Attire is required.

  • No photography or videography is allowed during the performance.

  • Multiple awards may be given in each competition category.

  • At the discretion of the Jury, awards may be withheld based on performance, or any misrepresentation of finalist.

  • Further detailed instructions will be provided to Competition Finalists upon final round registration and payment.

  • Finalists and families are responsible for travel and accommodation fees.
